Adaptation of the Teaching Concepts of the Chair of Thermodynamics in Summer Semester 2020

Since attendance courses at TUM will probably not be available until the end of the summer semester at the earliest, we are changing the teaching concepts so that it is possible to study from home:

The lectures and exercises Thermodynamics II, Combustion, Energy Optimization for Buildings and Solar Engineering will be made available for download in the form of videos on the regular dates. There will also be the possibility for chats and video chats. The lecture Automotive Air Conditioning/Cooling Technology has to be suspended in summer semester 2020. This cours is regularly offered again in winter semester 2020/2021.The practical course Control and Data Acquisition with LabVIEW will take place towards the end of the semester in an adapted form as a block course.

 

Welcome to the Institute of Thermodynamics

Technical thermodynamics is an integral part of power engineering, aerospace engineering, propulsion and automotive engineering as well as of industrial process technology. In the truest sense of the word interdisciplinary, thermodynamics provides engineering fundamentals and methods of analysis and prediction of energy and materials conversion, all of which are necessary for the designing and optimising of ecological and economic sustainable solutions in these fields.

Research and teaching at the Institute of Thermodynamics therefore have an interdisciplinary and also a technological engineering character. They are composed of elements from thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, acoustics, chemical reaction kinetics along with system dynamics. Thanks to the broad international research network of the Institute of Thermodynamics there are particularly interesting and varied fields of learning and work open to PhD students and to those students who are involved in the research projects of such postgraduates.

That is why the courses offered by the Institute of Thermodynamics range from the introduction to the basic terminology of thermodynamics during fundamental training as an engineer to specialist lectures during the master’s course. When working on sophisticated semester projects and final theses interested students can learn to contribute to leading edge research. Periods of practical work are offered for small groups in preparation for when their studies come to an end. This gives them an opportunity to practice such project-oriented working methods of engineers as required in industry.
