Reliability & Safety

Before being deployed in the power production market new technological solutions must possess a degree of reliability equivalent to, or even better than, those in place at the moment. A more fundamental understanding of processes, improved rules of interpretation and sharper calculation tools are needed to address the challenges of high reactivity fuels when developing new combustion technology for higher fuel flexibility, CO2 sequestration and regenerative power cycles based on hydrogen storage. Despite the political discussion on nuclear power, new plants are being built worldwide. Continuous improvement of risk assessment and failure mitigation strategies together with international discourse are deemed essential to minimise the hazard potential of the growing number of nuclear plants. For over 30 years the chair has built up experimental and numerical competence in thermal hydraulics and detonation research thereby providing public agencies with necessary basic data and models.
