Discribtion

Within the framework of conventional processes for polymers, compounding and thermoforming of thermoplastics as well as hot pressing of silicones will be carried out practically. At the interface to additive manufacturing, the extrusion of thermoplastics is presented as a possibility for the production of self-developed filaments.
In the context of additive manufacturing, the processing of thermoplastics via fused deposition modelling and the shaping of photopolymers using digital light processing will be explained. In addition, the electrospinning process for processing polymer solutions will be presented. In the topic blocks on additive manufacturing, the participants will be given design tasks which, once solved, will be 3D printed using the processes presented. In addition to the advantages of the process, the respective limitations will also be communicated.
The practical course is rounded off by teaching methods for post-processing (plasma treatment), classification and characterisation (light and electron microscopy, hardness test, tensile test) of the polymer materials used.

Learning outcomes

After participating in the module, students will be able to:

  • distinguish between the most common plastics processing methods (conventional and additive)
  • operate the plastics processing machines used
  • apply compounding and extrusion of plastics with the aim of functionalisation
  • to design components for additive manufacturing via FDM and DLP in a production-ready manner
  • assess the limits of surface modifications on plastic components using open-air plasma technology
  • to carry out independent analysis and classification (mechanical, light-optical, scanning electronic) of plastic components.
