Description

The assessment of the student’s performance is composed of three elements: 1. Practical skills and participation: the skill in carrying out the experiments and handling the different devices are tested together with the understanding of the theoretical background. It is also evaluated to which extent the students are able to apply what they have learned to analyze, evaluate and solve scientific problems.  2. Presentation: Each student presents a different topic of the practical course to their colleagues. In addition to the understanding of the subject, the extent to which each student is able to illustrate the knowledge to third parties and to make their own critical analysis is evaluated.  3. Written examination: In a written examination, the understanding of what has been learned during the practical course is tested.

Learning outcomes

After participating in the Vascular System practical course, students will be able to:

  • Perform cell expansion and subculture.
  • Carry out cell-based assays and evaluate their results.
  • Understand the clinical processes for the application of medical devices to the human body (e.g. stent implantation, heart valve implantation, heart-lung machine).
  • Asses the biological reaction of the body to medical implants (e.g. cytocompatibility and thrombogenicity of implant surfaces).
  • Estimate the logistic effort in the production of cardiovascular implants.
  • Have a better comprehension of the human cardiovascular system, its (patho)physiological processes, limitations of current treatments, and the potential of different experimental approaches in the cardiovascular research field.
  • Present and discuss different topics related to the human cardiovascular system and the medical technology applied to it.
