PhD Students from German Reserach Institutes Present Current Water Research Topics in Germany

The TUM DeSal Challenge 2016 was accompanied for the first time with the “TUM DeSal Young Scientists Colloquium” where 13 PhD students from 7 different German research institutes gave an overview of the most up-to-date research topics going on in the desalination and water treatment field.

The goal of the colloquium is to promote the exchange of experience, especially in the day-to-day business, between the young scientists. The event is an initiative of Deutsche MeerwasserEntsalzung e.V. (German Seawater Association) and our Chair of Thermodynamics.

Prof. Dr. Hans-Curt Flemming from University of Duisburg-Essen, Faculty of Chemistry - Biofilm Centre, opened the colloquium with his both scientific sophisticated and humourus talk about

Why and How Biofilms Cause Biofouling on Membranes – the „Hair-in-Sink-Effect“.

Afterwards, three sessions followed about the main topics High Salinities, Crystallization and Fouling, Membrane Desalination - Fundamentals and Materials and Advanced Technologies - Desalination and Water Treamtment. The organizers wish to thank Dr. Markus Spinnler (Chair of Thermodynamics, Technical University of Munich), Dr. Heike Glade (Institute of Technical Thermodynamics, University Bremen) and Prof. Dr. Hans-Curt Flemming (Biofilm Centre, University of Duisburg-Essen) for chairing these sessions!

Alexandra Rommerskirchen, PhD student of DWI Leibniz Institut für Interaktive Materialien e.V., was awarded by Nicolas Heyn, president of Deutsche MeerwasserEntsalzung e.V., for the best presentation, especially due to her new thoughts presented in her talk about Water Desalination by Flow-Electrode Capacitive Deionization. The Chair of Thermodynamics wishes to congratulate her for this outstanding achievment!
